Raise your hand if you’ve made New Year’s resolutions and within a month or less, you’ve dropped the ball on it, and it was never to be remembered again until the following New Year when you remember you made it!

Rest assured, you’re not alone.

The Word of the Year is an alternative way to create a resolution that brings you more meaning.

Choosing a word that represents what you want to focus on for that year can be something like your health, mental well-being, or something you want to bring more of into your life.

The word is YOURS; it has its meaning to YOU. It will become the little regular check-in to see how you’re tracking.

Defining your word is a positive way to anchor your intentions for a new year.

How do you determine what your word will be?

Start by reflecting on your year that has been. Grab a notepad and sit in a quiet place to think and feel into the following questions and answer them opening with whatever comes to mind.

  • What events or moments stand out for you?
  • What emotions and feelings show up when you think of 2023?
  • What made you feel stressed this year?
  • What habits do you want to change moving forward when considering the year you’ve had?
  • What accomplishments did you achieve this year? Did you celebrate them?
  • What did you need to focus more on that you wish you had?
  • Did you incorporate nourishing your body, mind and soul this year?
  • What are the five stand-out moments that instantly come to mind?
  • What did you love about those moments? What can you take away from those moments?
  • What are the first three words that come to mind when you think about this year?

What are your values, intentions and goals for the new year?

Now, let’s look at where you are and where you’re going.  What are values (things important to you) you hold in your heart? What intentions do you want to set for the new year? What goals or achievements would you like to see come into your life?

When thinking of the questions above, pay close attention to each of the following areas and answer those questions;

  • Your physical and emotional being
  • Your work or business
  • Your key relationships
  • Your lifestyle and hobbies
  • Desired goals

When you reflect on everything you’ve answered, what is showing up?

You may need to give yourself a day or two’s graces away from what you’ve written so when you reflect on your words; you can see with an open heart and mind what is showing up.

When you’re ready, review everything you’ve written. What are your first thoughts, what is standing out on your pages, and what is your heart telling you you need moving forward?

Could you write those thoughts and feelings coming up?

Review the words below and what words draw to you that may reflect those feelings and thoughts.

Which word stands out the most? It may not even be one to your heart of these words, but find a word that truly sings, and this word will be your 2023 word.

Now you have your word.

You can grab your journal or paper and write down a list of things you can implement throughout your year to help make your word come to life.
